Ashanti makes a comeback after 4 years

Ashanti was one of music's hottest stars, with two multiplatinum albums and a Grammy under her belt, until her third disc, 2004's 'Concrete Rose', landed like a brick on the music charts.

The album came out while the head of her music label, The Inc.'s Irv Gotti, was under investigation by the federal government (he was later charged with money laundering but acquitted of the charges). Ashanti blames the cloud surrounding the label for creating a climate that made it difficult for 'Concrete Rose' to bloom.

Q. You say your first single, 'The Way That I Love You' was inspired by the television show, "Snapped" (which is about women who are pushed to their breaking points).
I was watching it and feeling the passion in the lyrics of the record. I was like, "Oh my gosh. This is perfect for a woman who has snapped." I wanted to do something to inspire the video and blow it out. We wanted to do something more cinematic as opposed to a regular music video since I have been gone for four years since my last album. It just made perfect sense to make that marriage between the record and the visual.

Q. Is heartache the best source of inspiration?
Definitely. As I said, it is almost like a double-edged sword. You take your pros and cons with it. Me as a writer, any experience is good because it allows people to relate to you. When you write about stuff that is sincere and it really happens to you that is what kind of gets people like, "Wow, she is writing about my situation right now."

Q. You have been away for a while. Were you worried about recapturing your fan base?
I don't think that I went through thinking there is not going to be room. I think it is really important, me as a person and me as an artist that you have to bring your own flavor to the table. Being that I write all my own records, that is my niche. I am never going to have problem writing. I think that separates me from a lot of the females that are out. It is all about trying something different. Being that it has been four years it was really important to try something out of the box just to see. You have to keep the people interested and intrigued.

Q. A few blogs recently made fun of you, commenting on your weight. How do you deal with the criticism in this Internet/tabloid age?
Again, it is one of those things that is a double-edged sword. If there is something great and it is positive it is all good and with the click of a button, millions of people could know about it and chime in and give you your praises. On the other hand it could be something that is horrible and detrimental and someone could be exploiting you with a rumor or a lie or whatever they do with your picture. It comes with the territory. You have to take the good with the bad.

More About Ashanti: Hottest Pop Singer

Ashanti Quotes
"I didn't want to sing only slow songs and I didn't want to be spittin' rhymes. But Mary [J. Blige] put those concepts together. She cleared the way, and now I'm following my own path." -Ashanti

Why Is She Famous?
She made your head nod in the Ja Rule hit "Always On Time" setting the stage for her album, Ashanti, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard chart.

Sexiness:
Forget the tall, sleek supermodel. We want that around-the-way thug honey Ashanti. With a caramel complexion, almond eyes and a small booty luscious frame, she has everything we could ever want in a shorty. Her main appeal though is in her sweet voice and lyrics.

She has the ability to sound vulnerable and feminine yet there is no doubt that she is a formidable force to be reckoned with. The kind of girl you want to lavish with everything but can still take home and chill with. That is the Ashanti vibe and the ultimate in sex appeal, as far as we are concerned.

Success
Ashanti would score 100 on potential but for now, there are still some people who have yet to hear her talented voice. In time the world will know Ashanti though. She scored three major hits before her first album dropped. When it did on April 9, 2002, it went on to sell over 500,000 units in one week and entered the Billboard 200 chart at #1, knocking Celine Dion off of her pedestal. The enormity of the achievement is impressive because it compares and even surpasses the debut solo efforts of Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera and Jennifer Lopez. Speaking of Lopez, did we mention that Ashanti has a writing credit on her smash remix hit "I'm Real"? In addition, she has written tracks for Christina Milian and the upcoming pop act Shorty.

Ashanti Biography
Ashanti Douglas was born in 1980 in Glen Cove, Long Island, New York into a musical family. Her father used to sing and her mother is a dance instructor. Ashanti began to sing in a gospel choir at the age of 6. As she grew, her musical talent developed and with it, appearances followed. She danced in a show at Carnegie Hall and in the Disney television musical Polly. It was in high school that she honed her songwriting skills and harnessed her talent for creating a story that people could relate to, song after song.

She is Rolling
Ashanti first announced her presence with the Big Pun hit "How We Roll" in 2001. Her sound was infectious and caught the attention of record producers. Irv Gotti, the polished producer with Murder Inc. Records, was credited with her discovery and what was supposed to be an initial collaboration, turned into a record contract. The demure and feminine Ashanti was hesitant at first to sign with a label named Murder Inc., but she filled a void in the company stable of talent. What was a pure rap label became stronger with the arrival of the R&B singer.

The marketing team at Murder Inc. went to work to promote Ashanti in time for her debut release. She was featured on the Ja Rule smash "Always On Time," receiving major airwave and video exposure. In addition, her voice was loaned out to reigning Don of the Terror Squad, Fat Joe, for his big hit "What's Luv?". Ashanti stole both songs away from the thug rappers and created such a buzz that her self-titled debut album was released early, on April 9, 2002.

Timing was Key
The first single "Foolish" ripped apart the charts and the video was on heavy rotation as well. As a result, Ashanti sold over half a million units the first week and debuted in the top spot, a major achievement for a relative unknown with almost no expectations on her shoulders. In the future, you can expect to hear and see much more of this young talent. Ashanti has served notice that she is moving on up.
